Jean Theodore Descourtilz

Jean Theodore Descourtilz (1796 – 1855) is one of the world’s most famous painters of birds. He was both artist and scientist with a fascination for wild Brazil. The special interest of this series lies in the fact that each plate shows only one kind of Tropical Bird. Each bird is depicted against its natural surroundings of beautiful flowers, foliage, fruits and insects. The colours are rich, vibrant and a delight to view.

Below is a limited series of 1 each, Vintage Tropical Bird Prints of South America published in 1960, originally from a rare book of hand-coloured lithographs by Jean Theodore Descourtilz – Pageantry of Tropical Birds.
