Tropical Birds

A limited series of Vintage Tropical Bird prints. These book plates come from a book published in 1960 called Pageantry of Tropical Birds, South America. Originally taken from a rare book of hand-coloured lithographs by Jean Theodore Descourtilz.

Jean Theodore Descourtilz (1796 – 1855) was both artist and scientist. He is one of the world’s most famous painters of birds. The special interest of this series of Vintage Tropical Bird prints lies in the fact that each plate shows only one kind of Tropical Bird. Each bird is depicted against its natural surroundings of beautiful foliage, flowers, fruits, and insects.
